Valdez History: Valdez was once inhabited by Chugach Eskimos who used the area as a hub for trading. Their main trades were skins, furs and gems. In late 1890 a gold rush led to a significant growth of the city. After the turn of the century, in early 1900's the city was booming with the industry of mining (gold, copper and silver mostly). Again in the 1970's Valdex experienced a boom with the construction of the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline. Valdez experienced another boost to local economy when it was covered in oil, due to the Exxon Oil Spill in 1989, from a spill located only 25 miles from the city. Today tourism, fishing and shipping play major roles in the cities economy
