City Motto: There's no place like Nome!

City History: Nome was inhabited by native indians until the late 1890's when three Swede's found gold in the Anvil Creek. Within a year the region boomed into a town and by 1901 Nome was incorporated as a city. Nome continued to swell with residents to just above 12,000 until the late 1920's when the gold rush was tapering off. Nome has continued to be the "Hub" of supplies for northwestern Alaska. Oil and gas development, as well as gold mining, continue to be the main area's of industry for this little city. Tourism is constantly increasing here which brings with it the need for more and more local native crafts.

Weather: You can expect temperatures of 45-55 degrees in the summer months in Nome. Winter's temp's are much lower with averages of -5 to 10 above zero.

Nome Facts:

  • Nome is the official Finish Line for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
  • This city has boasted two names: Anvil City and Nome!
  • Residents of this city number well over 4,000.
