Kodiak History: The beautiful and lush island of Kodiak was originally inhabited by Alutiq Natives, followed by Russian fur traders who established their settlements in the 1700's. Centuries later Kodiak was a full Alaskan city, incorporated in September of 1940. WWII greatly increased the population of this small island for a short time. in 1946 Kodiak opened its first library (housed in two small shacks adjacent to the community center). Kodiak's thriving waterfront and several small surrounding villages were heavily damaged by the tsunamis that followed the major earthquake that hit South Central Alaska on Good Friday in 1964. Commercial fishing, maritime businesses and the nations largest Coast Guard Station are the main industries of this small Alaskan City.
