Juneau History: The area of Juneau was, like many areas of Alaska, inhabited by Tlinglit Indians. Later it was founded by two men, Richard Harris and Joseph Juneau, who were in search of gold and found it! In 1888 these to men staked out the town and spread word of the gold find. The town soon grew and incorporated into a city in 1900, it was later established as the capital of the state of Alaska, in 1906. Today Juneau, which is located on the pan handle of Alaska, thrives with the business of government, fishing and tourism as its main industries.

Weather: You can enjoy mild summers in this capital city. Temperatures in the summer months range in the low to mid fifties most of the time. Winters are a chilly 15-25 degrees on average.

  • There are approximately 30,000 residents in the city of Juneau.
  • Juneau has gone by three different names during History; Harrisburg (after Richard Harris), Rockwell and Juneau (after Joseph Juneau).
