City History: Originally inhabited by Dena'ina Indians, Homer started to thrive as a city back in the late 1800's when coal mining was an active industry. After the turn of the century Homer's industry changed focus from coal mining to commercial fishing. The city, still today, relies most heavily on Commercial fishing, followed by Tourism. Homer was incorporated as a city less than a week after the Good Friday Earthquake of 1964. Homer is now home to over 5,000 residents.

Weather: Summer in Homer are beautiful, the temperature averages 55 - 60. The winter weather in Homer is a frigid 10 - 15 degrees on average.

  • The city's namesake is Homer Pennock, a promoter for the Alaska Gold Mining Company.
  • The majority of activity in Homer happens on "The Spit", a 4.5 mile stretch of land at the end of the city.
