Fairbanks History: Fairbanks was settled thanks to a boat captain that wouldn't take E.T. Barnette any farther in 1901! Barnette offloaded his bounty of supplies and was basically forced to start his supply company right there on the spot. Shortly after his arrival to the area gold was struck by Felix Pedro (summer of 1902). Known originally as Barnette's Cache the name was changed to Fairbanks in 1902 in honor of U.S. Senator Charles Fairbanks. It wasn't long before fairbanks was beginning to grow and by 1903 it was incorporated as a city. Fairbanks continued to grow and flourished during the oil industry boom of mid 1910's. In 1938 the military arrived in Fairbanks, building two bases Ladd Field and Eielson Air Force Base. Today mining, tourism and government are the primary industries of Fairbanks.
