City History: Originally home to the Alutiq who used this area as a small hub for trading amongst other clans. Originally called Eyak, the city of Cordova was named by a man named Michael James Heney, he was also responsible for building the local railroad. In 1887 the area's first cannery was built and began. At the turn of the century copper ore was discovered in near by mountains by two miners, beginning the mining boom around Cordova. The city incorporated in early July of 1909. The local women of the Episcopal Church started the first public library in the summer of 1925. Today Cordova's economy is based on the fishing industry, fish processing and some tourism.

Weather: Visit the city of Cordova in the summer and you can expect to have average temperatures between the high 50's and mid 60's. Winter on the other hand is a bit colder with averages from the high teens to high twenties.

  • The population of Cordova is estimated at over 2300 residents.
  • Until the early 60's when numbers declined, Cordova was known as the "razor clam capital of the world".
