City History: First contact with the original people of this area dates back to 1756 when European explorers came to Anchorage and met the Athabaskan Dena’ina people. By the 1780's the area had been settled by Russian traders. The trading business continued to thrive for the next hundred years until the sale of the state of Alaska to the United States Of America, in 1867. The gold rush of the late 1890's helped to increase the wealth of settlers in and near the area. The anxiously awaited completion of the road taking travelers in and out of the Kenai Peninsula was finished in the early 1950's. Major havoc struck in 1964 when the "good friday earthquake" was felt by all in Anchorage and the surrounding area's. The 1970's brought with it the oil boom in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska that helped to keep the city growing in numbers.

Weather: The average summertime temperature in Anchorage is around 60 degrees. The wintertime averages considerably colder temps ranging from 10 to 35 degree’s. The coldest times of the year can bring low’s well below zero. The record low for Anchorage is -38 degrees (f) in 1948.
